MISSOULA A new state law takes effect next month, aimed at protecting consumer privacy and preventing identity theft.

The law, which takes effect March 1st, requires almost all businesses in the state to take certain precautions when disposing of customer records.

Businesses must also alert customers if their computer security systems are breached, and can't print more than the last five digits of a customer's credit card number or expiration date on a receipt.

The Montana Chamber of Commerce and other agencies are welcoming the new law. They say identity theft is a growing problem for both businesses and individuals.

Similar legislation is already in place in other states."
