NEW YORK — A New York City Department of Enviromental Protection (DEP) laptop computer containing a map of the city water system was stolen sometime last weekend from a DEP vehicle, according to a Feb. 23 article in the New York Sun.

The computer contained a pictorial representation of city water mains, including symbols for such features as fire hydrants and trunk lines, the article said.

A spokeswoman for an environmental group warned that terrorists could go into neighborhoods with the map and tamper with trunk lines that feed water into people's homes, the article said.

Charles Sturcken, DEP chief spokesman, said in the article that someone could not infiltrate the system through the pipes because they are made of cast iron and the water they contain is pressurized."
