Lynnette Ward was in a state of shock after walking into the Carlisle Public Library at approximately 8:45 a.m. Monday morning. She discovered empty desks, both in the public area and behind the counter where she works.

Four computers were missing. The CPUs and the monitors were gone, but the keyboards and the mice were not taken.

Ward also noticed that a window in the back corner of the building was open. She called the Carlisle Police Department and Police Chief Eric Frank responded, as did Patrolman Randi Files, who is a certified crime scene technician.

Ward told police that the break-in must have happened between the time the library closed on Friday, Dec. 15, and Monday morning.

Frank and Files checked out the building, inside and out, with Files discovering two DVDs on the ground outside the open window.

“They did gain entrance through the southwest window of the library,” Frank said.

Four Gateway computers valued at $1,000 each plus an undetermined number of DVDs were taken.

Files processed the area, taking photos and dusting for fingerprints. She and Frank also scouted the surrounding area for any other evidence.

Lonoke/Prairie County Library Director Leroy Gattin said that a $300 reward would be given to anyone providing information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.

According to Gattin, the library system has computers in reserve that can be put into service to get the Carlisle Public Library back in business soon. Plans are to get the circulation computers going now and the public access with Internet connections will be on line after the first of the year.
