Children sent home from school after attack by vandals
11.50am: CHILDREN were sent home from a Peterborough school this morning after vandals hurled bricks through windows and rampaged through classrooms.
The thugs struck at Old Fletton Primary School, in Fletton, last night, smashing the windows of four classrooms, pushing over desks and stealing laptops and DVDs.
The 270 pupils were told to stay at home as teachers and helpers began a big clean-up operation.
Headteacher Cath Hainsworth said the classrooms were showered in debris and glass.
She said: 'It is just a mess, glass has gone everywhere.
'They didn't just smash windows, but came into the classrooms and tipped things over.
'Christmas decorations are covered in glass and we have to throw away ruined children's work.
'Parents are clearly upset, but have been extremely supportive.
'We've had offers of help from cleaning up to cooking bacon sandwiches.'
It is thought that the vandals climbed over a fence in St Margaret's Road, off Fletton High Street, to get into the school grounds between 7pm and 9pm last night.
The windows at the school have been boarded up and it is expected to reopen tomorrow.
9.50am: HUNDREDS of pupils were turned away from school today after vandals wrecked four classrooms.
Bricks were thrown through windows at Fletton Primary School, in Peterborough, overnight.
