ZIMBABWE HARD DRIVES STOLEN FROM SENIOR EXECUTVES COMPUTERS AT BEVERLY BUILDING SOCIETY The Financial Gazette: Break-in at building society HQ
Stanley Kwenda Staff Reporter
THIEVES broke into Beverley Building Society’s headquarters in Harare this week and stole hard drives from computers used by senior executives. The break in occurred on Monday night.
The hard drives stolen contained classified information, sources said, and there were immediate fears the theft could be an inside job.
Beverly Building Society, Financial Director Chris Mwerenga confirmed the break-in, but declined to comment further, citing the need to protect on-going investigations.
But said a company source: “Nine computers, including those in our reconciliation department, were vandalised and we suspect that it was an inside job,”
“We have an access system which compels everyone to have a name tag in order to gain access into the building, in this case we suspect that it was an inside job.”
The source said officials at the society’s head office were helping the police with investigations.
“We suspect that there could have been two motives. First, that someone was trying to conceal fraud, and secondly, that someone was just trying to make ends meet by selling the hard drives,” said the source.
The source however said not much damage had been done, save for the loss of valuable working time.
“We have a separate server, so some of the records could easily be reconciled.”
The Beverley hard-drive theft is the second such break-in to hit a financial institution.
In 2004, NMB Bank suffered a similar theft when burglars broke in and removed the hard drives of computers used by the bank’s senior management, then led by Julius Makoni and James Mushore. The burglars left all other valuables intact.
