Insiders pose biggest data theft risk in 2007

In an interview with Silicon.com, Gartner analyst Jay Heiser told organizations that “the biggest risk will be insiders, not outsiders. The fact is that a significant amount of proprietary and regulated data walks out the door everyday.”
Heiser is confirming the view that, despite 2006 having had the highest volume of publicized data theft cases on record, many firms have not yet learned the lessons and are leaving themselves wide open to further breaches in 2007.
And despite the reported rise in theft from devices such as mobile phones, it seems the good old PC is still the number one target for anyone looking to get their hands on valuable data: “If I were a cyber criminal I would craft stealth software that stole stuff from computers with valuable information. I don’t have enough imagination to think of anything highly valuable to steal from a mobile phone,” said Heiser.
Funny that; as WatchYourEnd has reported in the past, we’re seeing an explosion of malware specifically designed to syphon off business-critical from PCs onto all manner of easily-concealed portable devices.
