PENNSYLVANIA POLICE COMPUTER CONTAINING SENSITIVE CRIME SCENE DATA STOLEN I Want My ESS by Essential Security Software, Inc.:

Letter to Columbia Police Department:
Posted on Wednesday 7 February 2007

Dear Columbia Police,

A desktop computer from your department was recently sold to a PC shop with private information on the hard drive. Apparently all computers in the department were replaces but supposedly stored in the station itself.

It is believed that an officer stole a computer and brought it to his residence where a roommate then took it. The computer contained crime scene and autopsy photos along with a list of officers and their unlisted numbers.

Here at ESS we would like to remind everyone, especially the Columbia Police department that all information should be locked down. The confidential information on computers should be always encrypted. Encrypting the files with a product like Taceo will protect them when the file is in use and even when deleting. Remember if you are disposing of the computer simply deleting a file and reformatting does prevent the files from resurfacing if searched hard enough so encryption is always the recommended.

Policing security breaches,

ESS
