UGANDA COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM ORGANISATIONS New Vision Online : VCCU warns public on computer theft:

VCCU warns public on computer theft

By Anne Mugisa

The Violent Crime Crack Unit has warned of a wave of theft of computers, which are suspected to be sold abroad.

The robbers target reputable organisations and connive with the guards on duty, the head of the crime unit told the press in Kampala yesterday.

David Magara asserted: “Violent crime has reduced but a new type of crime is surfacing, and that is office and store-breaking, with the computers as targeted items.”

He asked: “what is in these computers that generates such interest in the thieves?”

Magara warned that whoever buys the stolen computers would be considered a robber.

“Since it is armed robbery, anybody who buys these computers will be arrested and treated as having used aggravated means to get them.”

The latest victims of the robbers were organisations run by the European Union, Lowe Scanad and an unnamed firm.

The organisations housed on Lumumba Avenue were broken into on February 4. Twenty-one computer Central Processing Units and three monitors were stolen.

Four suspects, Nathan Katende, Musisi, Abu Mustafa and Ramathan Kamuru, have been arrested over the robbery.

Magara said in all cases reported, guards abandoned their guns and uniforms
