A Filipino working in Lake Louise has been sentenced to four months in jail for possession of stolen property and unauthorized use of credits.

In Banff Provincial Court, Monday (March 12), Camilo Ramos pleaded guilty to five counts of unauthorized credit card use and one to possession of stolen property. Ramos had been in custody in the Calgary Remand Centre for 54 days since his arrest.

According to Crown Prosecutor Marta Juzwiak, Ramos was working at the Chateau Lake Louise when, on Jan. 19, a roommate reported to RCMP that his credit card had been stolen and more than $1,600 charged.

The victim, said Juzwiak, is also from the Philippines and is working in Canada to make money and send it home to his family.

Ramos had been in Canada on a working visa and working as a housekeeper.

When RCMP searched Ramos’ residence, they found bills and credit cards receipts, a desktop computer, toys and items stolen from Chateau Lake Louise itself.

The initial complainant, said Juzwiak, also reported that Ramos had tried to get employees to collect credit card numbers of clients staying at the hotel.

Ramos, said defence lawyer Tannis Naylor, is 30 and has a wife and two children in the Philippines. Naylor suggested that, as Ramos was apologetic, sorry for his actions and had no previous record, time served would suit as punishment.

Judge John Reilly sentenced Ramos to four months, in addition to his
54 days already served and said the credit card companies would have to seek their own judgments for losses.
