INDIANA COMPUTERS STOLEN FROM HOMES http://www.wishtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=6242525&nav=menu35_4
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. - Burglars hit a number of homes in one Zionsville neighborhood. Many of the victims were asleep while the thieves ripped them off.
For Zionsville police it was a busy morning in the Thornhill subdivision off Ford Road. Police say thieves targeted at least five homes were burglarized.
"They took a couple of purses, wallet, cell phone, laptop, projection device, things like that," said Michael Howdin.
Howdin and his wife were asleep upstairs when someone entered their home through an unlocked back door. His 24-year-old son was awake downstairs at the time.
"Actually heard a noise. Thought maybe I'd come back down, and went out of his room down the hall. That's when he realized we'd been hit," said Howdin.
Zionsville police normally work one burglary case a month. Now they've got multiple cases from one night alone. And what concerns them the most is families were home at the time of the crime.
"Our concern is if one of the children or adult got up to get a glass of water and they confronted them there could have been someone hurt or killed," said Joe Robinson with the Zionsville Police Department.
Police say the thief or thieves entered all the homes through unlocked back doors. They got away with money, computers, even a 50 inch plasma TV.
"I don't feel the subjects will be back here this evening, but they may branch out into one of the other local neighborhoods or they may branch out into a surrounding community," said Robinson.
Police urge all residents to lock their doors at night.
"I think they came in, we are talking 20 paces where they hit everything and then they took off," said Howdin.
For Howdin, the thieves stole more than cash and computers. They got away with his family's peace of mind.
Detectives are following up on a few leads.
Anyone with information should call the Zionsville Police Department.
