Police have arrested three Tygerberg Hospital laundry workers for theft and seized computer equipment, tools and linen believed to have been stolen by them.
Premier Ebrahim Rasool's spokeswoman, Shado Twala, said the Forensic Investigative Unit (FIU) in his office and the police conducted a search and seizure operation at the private residences of the three officials following a tip-off from a whistleblower.
The three were arrested during the early hours of yesterday morning.
They are expected to appear in court before the weekend.
"During this intelligence- driven operation, the police seized various items including computer equipment, tools and linen being the property of the provincial government.
The FIU is handling a number of complaints implicating employees at the laundry.
The complaints include theft of assets and corruption in the procurement of goods and services.
The probe has been extended to other health institutions and would be concluded in six weeks, said Twala.
She said Rasool welcomed the arrests which followed his announcement last year of a forensic audit of all provincial government departments into matters raised by the auditor- general during the 2005/2006 financial year.
