Prom funds stolen from Falmouth High School

FALMOUTH – Vandals stole a safe with $11,000 in cash and checks inside from the high school activities room, some of the money was for next Saturday’s junior prom, police said.

Students were given the option of writing a new check and advised they might want to stop payment on personal checks now in the hands of thieves.

The money was inside a safe, about the size of a dorm room refrigerator, that was removed from the Falmouth High School activities room during a vandalism andtheft spree that apparently started with a hunt for cash in the cafeteria, police and school officials said.

Four laptop computers valued at $6,000 were also stolen, Falmouth Police Sgt. Douglas DeCosta said yesterday.

Vandals left scrape marks on the floor as they dragged the safe out of the building, DeCosta said.

Mindy Fenstermaker, whose daughter plans to attend Saturday’s prom at the Seacrest Resort in North Falmouth, stopped payment on her $80 check for two tickets and wrote a new one. The transaction cost her $28.
