GEORGIA COMPUTER THIEF ARRESTED Suspect arrested in string of burglaries | SavannahNow.com:

Suspect arrested in string of burglaries

A man has been arrested as a suspect in a string of recent burglaries in downtown Savannah.

Vernon Lamar Green, 20, of Savannah, was arraigned in Recorder's Court Friday on one count of burglary. He was being held without bond Friday night at the Chatham County jail.

Officers with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department arrested Green about 4:30 a.m. Thursday while he was riding a stolen bicycle weighted down by a cache of other stolen goods, said police spokesman Sgt. Mike Wilson.

Arresting officers said Green was carrying two laptop computers, several iPods, camera gear and other stolen electronics.

Police have recovered at least $30,000 in stolen goods and three cars they say were stolen and abandoned by Green.

Detectives think Green is responsible for at least eight of 14 recent burglaries that have occurred in the area of 32nd, Hall and Duffy streets. Most of the burglaries occurred while residents were still asleep in their homes.

Property-crime detectives used mapping and data analysis to identify the pattern of burglaries after noticing several were occurring in neighboring areas. By saturating their patrols at the right time and the right place, they were able to catch the suspect, Wilson said.

Detectives are investigating at least two other people related to the six other burglaries and auto thefts.
