T’PURAM: Three youths involved in around 40 theft cases in the city were arrested by the city police on Friday.

Shibili, 20, Ajeeb, 19, and Rakeeb, 19, all natives of Beemapally, were arrested by the Fort Police on Thursday night.

City Police Commissioner Ravada A Chandra Sekhar said that they had so far stolen gold ornaments weighing around 1.7 kg and goods and cash worth Rs 9.7 lakh. Of this, 32 sovereigns of gold ornaments, Rs 35,000 in cash, one computer, television and DVD player were recovered.

The three were arrested from the premises of a timber shop near Killiar on Thursday night while returning after a theft. Two persons of the gang are absconding, the police said.

Similarity of Shibili with the sketch prepared by the police in connection with the murder of one Aysha Beevi of Pettah had led to the arrest. However, the gang has no role in the murder, the police said.

The gang used to break open doors of buildings at night with the coconut de-husking tool. The stolen goods were mainly sold at shops at Chalai and Beemapally areas. Some gold ornaments have been pledged and the cash loaned for interest.

A team comprising Fort circle-inspector K S Gopakumar and Poonthura circle-inspector Sureshkumar is investigating the case under the supervision of Fort assistant commissioner K C Sasikumar.
