High school damaged and computers stolen

Friday, November 02, 2007

PLAINFIELD: Five computers were stolen from Plainfield High School and more than $4,000 in damage was reported after a break-in early yesterday morning, authorities said.

Police initially received an alarm call from the Park Avenue school at 12:18 a.m., said city Public Safety Director Martin Hellwig. Officers arrived and didn't see any forced entry. A school security team patrolling outside didn't report any problems, Hellwig said.

Around 7:45 a.m., police received a call from the school, saying its security director's office had been broken into. A laptop computer had been stolen in his office, along with several keys to different rooms in the building.

Officers discovered 14 doors to offices and classrooms on the school's second, third and fourth floors had been either broken into or vandalized, including windows smashed, Hellwig said. In all, three laptops and two desk top computers were stolen, along with the $4,000 in damage.

The school's first floor is equipped with a motion sensor, but it was not tripped. Hellwig said he believed whoever broke in "has knowledge of the building."

Police are investigating.
