GRAND RAPIDS -- Detectives suspect burglars are lurking inside downtown businesses until employees leave, then stealing laptop computers and electronics. There have been 13 burglaries in a half-mile radius around Fountain Street NW and Ionia Avenue in the past four weeks, Lt. Ralph Mason said. The burglars are striking between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., leading police to believe they are hiding inside bathrooms or other areas that go unchecked before closing time. Valuables should be locked up at night, businesses should have active alarm systems and common areas should be scouted before the last employees leave, police recommended.
