Customers frustrated, angry at computer theft

BANK of Ireland customers yesterday told of their frustration and worry at the theft of four laptops containing sensitive information.

Yesterday, outside the Bank of Ireland branch at St Stephen's Green, which is one of seven branches affected, customers told of their anxiety that information could be open to identity theft.

However, many said they would continue banking with the financial institution.

Jean Donohoe, who worked with the UN Emergency Response in Italy for over 30 years, yesterday described the situation as "pretty bad".

Due to her previous work, she has intimate knowledge of information being passed on from laptops and the stringent procedures involved to ensure it does not escape.

"There will always be human error, but I think this loss shows negligence on the part of the bank. It shouldn't have been allowed to happen."

And for Kilkenny native Orla Ryan, the loss of information is also a major concern.

"It is a worry, definitely. The fact they didn't say anything is bad," she said

In contrast, Bartek Sobolewski, originally from Poland, felt the security breech did not make sense in light of the fact the information was of such a sensitive nature.

"Information like that should not be kept on a laptop. It should be online with serious security measures attached," he said.

Bank of Ireland said yesterday that it has been monitoring the accounts of those affected and has not detected fraudulent or suspicious activity in relation to the accounts.
