Bail for trio arrested in computer investigation
Three men have been released on bail after two weeks in custody while the police investigate allegations of a Christchurch shop dealing in stolen computers.
A large police team is still working on the 180 personal computers, laptops, and other gear seized in the police raids on June 25 at the end of the four month operation.
In the Christchurch District Court today, Judge Noel Walsh heard that 12 police were still engaged full time on the inquiry. Seventy of the seized computers have been examined so far.
Counsel argued that the three Chinese men arrested had been in custody long enough, though the police were seeking to hold them for a further two weeks while the inquiry was completed.
Judge Walsh agreed and released the trio on bail for a pre-depositions conference on August 14.
He ordered that their passports be handed in, that the men not associate with each other, and report to the Christchurch police three times a week.
The men all live at different addresses.
They face charges of conspiring with each other from December to June to receive stolen electrical goods including computers and software.
They are Chao Liu, 26, unemployed, Feilin Yang, 24, of central Christchurch, and Lianwen Chen, a 26-year-old company director.
Defence counsel Paul Norcross said Chen had lived in New Zealand for five years and had permanent residency.
No pleas have been entered.
