Former Police Officer pleads guilty to misconductBy Claudia Lauer - clauer@thesunnews.com
Former Horry County Police Officer Thomas Chestnut pled guilty Wednesday in district court to charges of misconduct in office, according to the S.C. Solicitor's Office.
Chestnut, who was a three-year veteran on the force, was arrested on April 1 after Horry County Police tracked a stolen computer through its electronic internet signal to Chestnut's home. The computer had been stolen from a realty business. Police searched Chestnut's home and found the computer as well as several other items including a digital camera that were reported missing from the business.
Chestnut was sentenced to three years probation, after an Horry County judge suspended a six year jail sentence. He is also required to perform 200 hours of community service. Chestnut was originally charged with second degree burglary as well as misconduct.
Chestnut's wife, Carolyn Spears Chestnut, 38, was arrested a few days later on April 8, and charged with receiving stolen goods.
