Theft: Duo hid out in unoccupied home
Santa Fe police say two young men stole computers from Capital High School early Friday, then broke in to a nearby residence and forced a brief standoff with officers.
Not long after the city police department's SWAT team arrived at the home in the 6300 block of Jaguar Drive, Fabian Madrid, 20, and Manuel Candelaria, 16, surrendered and were taken to jail, a police report says."
Police were first called to the high school on the southwestern edge of Santa Fe about 2:40 a.m. by a witness who said he saw Madrid climbing a fence while carrying computer equipment. The witness told investigators he had seen Candelaria keeping watch while Madrid entered the building. The witness said he confronted Candelaria but returned to his home after Candelaria told him, "Go back inside because my homie has a .45 Glock and he'll shoot you," the report says. The witness watched as the two men entered an unoccupied home on Jaguar Drive carrying the computer equipment, according to the report. Officers arrived on scene and tried to get the two men to come out of the house but were not initially successful, according to Deputy Police Chief Benjie MontaƱo and the police report. When Candelaria and Madrid finally came out about 3:25 a.m., they were both "very outspoken and appeared to be proud of their affiliation with the 'West Side Locos 13' gang," the police report states. The two men admitted to drinking alcohol while inside the residence and had slurred speech when they were arrested, the report says. Candelaria later admitted to the Capital High School burglary and directed police to the stolen computers, which were hidden among trees behind the Jaguar Drive residence, according to the report. Candelaria was charged with assault, being a minor under the influence of alcohol, being an accessory to larceny and two counts of being an accessory to burglary. Madrid was charged with aggravated burglary, burglary, larceny, concealing his identity, being a minor under the influence of alcohol and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
