Burglars stole �2 million worth of computer equipment from a building as Guy Ritchie celebrated his 40th bithday next door in his pub.
The gang managed to bypass a state-of-the-art security system at a BT telephone exchange, stealing computer equipment and telephone cables.
The theft managed to disrupt telecommunications, causing thousands of internet sites to crash and putting phones out of action in central London.
It is thought the thieves may have may have used Ritchie's birthday bash as a distraction.
The director of films Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was celebrating with his wife Madonna, and other famous friends, at The Punchbowl in Mayfair.
A BT spokesman confirmed the theft took place between 8pm and 9pm on Wednesday night - just as Ritchie's party started.
In a statement, Scotland Yard said it is thought technical equipment was stolen.
A spokesman said officers from Westminster CID were investigating and no arrests have been made so far.
Friends of Ritchie's celebrating his birthday included Sting's wife Trudie Styler.
Ritchie's latest film RocknRolla has recently topped the UK box office chart.
