NEW JERSEY COMPUTER THIEF CHARGED Man charged with theft of laptop | APP.com | Asbury Park Press:
LAKEHURST — Kevin C. Carr, 21, of 12th Avenue in Manchester was charged with burglary and theft Friday after police responded to a report of a suspicious car parked overnight at the McDonald's restaurant on Route 70, Sgt. Ronald Heinzman reported.
Carr, who worked at the restaurant, is charged in connection with the theft of a government computer from the car, which was left locked but with an open window, police said.
Patrolman Jeffrey Emmons responded about 5:30 a.m. Friday and found the car with the glove box door ripped off and papers strewn around, Heinzman said.
Emmons contacted the car's owner, John Wain, who asked whether his laptop was still in the car. Emmons said no laptop was found.
Around the same time, Manchester police noticed Carr rollerblading on Route 37 while carrying a laptop computer case. They questioned him and took him into custody, Heinzman said.
Carr told police that he had stolen the computer, stashed it away from the car, and then returned in the morning on his rollerblades to retrieve it, Heinzman said. Carr was taken to the Ocean County Jail in Toms River in lieu of $7,500 bail.
Wain told police that he had locked his car doors but did not realize he had left a rear window partially opened. The computer, which has a thumb-print scanner device needed for activation, was returned to Wain, police said.
