MUSKEGON COUNTY -- A Muskegon Community College student now faces trials for allegedly concealing expensive computers stolen from the college and for allegedly stealing a life ring from a Lake Michigan pier.
Geoffrey Dean Craigie, 19, this week waived his probable-cause hearing on the computer charge, causing him to be bound over to 14th Circuit Court for a felony trial; and, separately, was scheduled for a July 10 misdemeanor trial in 60th District Court on the life-ring charge.
The Muskegon Township man is accused of stealing projectors from the college he attended so he could sell them on Craigslist, an online classified site that's recently been the focus of several high-profile criminal cases. In Craigie's Craigslist case, he's charged with receiving and concealing stolen property worth between $1,000 and $20,000.
In the life-ring case, he's charged with tampering with, taking or removing a marine safety device.
Muskegon police reported they found the life ring, marked "Property of Fruitland Township -- Do not remove" hanging on the wall of Craigie's bedroom while they were investigating the stolen computer projectors.
The original charge stemmed from MCC's reported theft of two ceiling-mounted projectors, reportedly following an earlier theft of five in January that hadn't been reported to police. Each was valued at about $1,000.
College staff discovered that someone was trying to sell a projector that looked like theirs on Craigslist. Police investigation of that tip led them to Craigie and the discovery of four projectors in his room, police said, including one that matched the serial number of a stolen projector.
