Suspect detained as two Media Centre computers are recovered

TWO out of three laptop computers stolen from Uganda Media Centre were recovered in its environs, a hint that the centre�s staff may have been behind their theft.

The laptops, currently in Police custody, were discovered at the back of the centre�s premises on Colville Street in Kampala.

According to the centre's boss, Fred Opolot, the gadgets were found next to trash cans placed close to a generator.

�The Police instructed the guard to look around. They suspected that they could possibly recover them. Indeed, when he searched, he found the computers,� Opolot said yesterday.

They were in good condition but would be subjected to examination by Police experts, Opolot pointed out.

Thugs on Tuesday night passed through a window to get into the centre's offices before stealing the three computers, said to have been in the public relations office.

An office attendant, who also works as a cleaner, only identified as Opio, pointed out that some items were missing when he reported for work the morning.

Opio was detained at the Central Police Station in Kampala as the investigation into the burglary entered their second day.

Uganda Media Centre is the Government�s public relations arm. Officials address the press there.

Andrew Ddiba, the station CID boss disclosed that about 10 staff were interrogated over the incident.
