Police hope video will help identify high school burglar

SPRINGVILLE - Just days before school starts, over a dozen computers are stolen from a Springville High School. This is the third time this year a burglar has broken into the school and stolen valuable items. Now police are hoping the public can help catch the person responsible.

It's believed the burglar is the same person, but police cannot say that for sure because during Sunday's third break-in, the thief stole the schools surveillance cameras and equipment.

The burglar uses a hammer and drill to shatter windows and unlock doors. Police say he broke into the school and stole a 32-inch flat-screen television during in January, and then a 42-inch TV on Friday. On that day, the burglar left a trace of blood and a note apologizing for stealing; even saying it was the tough economy that provoked it.

Someone then returned to the school on Sunday and stole the surveillance cameras and 13 Mac computers.

Lana Hiskey, spokeswoman for the Nebo School District, says, "This does hit the pocket book, it does hit our kids, and safety is our No. 1 concern."

Hiskey says all 13 Mac computers were stolen out of a multi-media classroom; and with school starting tomorrow, teachers are going to improvise and get help from other classrooms until the computers can be replaced.

She says the break-ins are frustrating and disappointing not only for the school, but for the students as well.

She says, "Tomorrow we start our first day here in Nebo School District, and you know you always want to start with a bang, and this isn't the way you want to start the first day of school."

Hiskey says she finds it hard to believe that any one in the community would be responsible for the break-ins but says it's possible.
