MONTEREY PARK -- Thieves stole 14 computers from Cal State LA that may contain confidential information of more than 600 former and prospective students.

University officials are warning the security breach may put the students at risk for fraud or identity theft.

The computers -- two desktops and 12 laptops -- were stolen on Aug. 1 from a fifth-floor science office on campus. The thieves broke a widow to gain access.

The computers contained names, Social Security numbers and addresses of 613 people associated with the university's minority Opportunities in Research program.

Officials say 605 of those are former and prospective students. Eight are faculty.

The university began notifying students of the theft on Aug. 10.

University police are investigating. Anyone who fears they may be at risk as a result of the thefts can call (800) 833-4029 for information.
