WEATHERFORD -- Police are searching for a man they say cooked up some trouble at a Weatherford Wal-Mart when he stole a computer by hiding it into a box meant for a child’s kitchen set.
Surveillance cameras captured the entire Aug. 4 theft, police say.
The man walked into the toy department of the Wal-Mart at 1836 S. Main Street shortly before 9 p.m. and dumped out the contents of a child’s kitchen set, placing the empty box back on the shelf.
He then walked to the electronics department, where he selected a Dell computer worth $848 before returning to the toy department. There, he placed the computer inside the empty kitchen box, then replaced some of the toys in the box to conceal it. He then proceeded to a self-check out register, where he paid $44.97 for the kitchen set.
“He basically got a computer for 40 something dollars,” said Weatherford police Cpl. Wendy Field.
The thief narrowly escaped his goose being cooked when the store’s door alarm sounded as he passed through, prompting a door greeter to approach him and peer inside the box. She did not, however, discover the theft.
“She saw part of the toys that normally come in that box and I guess just assumed it was OK,” Field said.
The man is described as white with dark brown hair. He was wearing green shorts, a white button-up short-sleeve shirt and sunglasses.
Anyone with information about his identity is asked to call the Weatherford police at 817-598-4344 or Crime Stoppers at 817-599-5555.
