Monday, Blue Cross Blue Shield workers noticed something missing here at their Eastgate offices.
Dozens of computer hard drives weren't where they were supposed to be.
68 drives to be exact.
Authorities say a burglar alarm went off Friday...
but Blue Cross didn't report the possible theft until making a visual inspection days later. Sgt. Jerri Weary with the Chattanooga Police Department says "they could have been taken anytime during the weekend."
Officers didn't find any visable signs of entry...
And now want to know how the burglar gained access. "Everything's possible, it could have been a really crafty person who knew how to get into the building and give the appearance of nothing being out of position," says Sgt. Weary.
Investigators also want to know why *these* drives might have been targeted. "We don't know what's on the hard drive files. Only blue cross blue shield does, but as with the medical files and anything else that contains personal information and social security numbers and financial information, there's always the possibility for identity theft," says Sgt. Weary.
A Blue Cross spokesperson says she doesn't know if the missing drives contain private patient information.
This reported theft comes as Blue Cross continues to relocate employees and equipment to its new state headquarters in downtown Chattanooga.
Blue Cross officials say they're cooperating fully with the investigation, which -- due to the potential for computer crimes and identity theft, includes federal authorities.
Blue Cross tells WDEF News 12 the "alarm" that was triggered was not something that made a *sound.*
Their computer systems generated a notice that there was an issue with the servers.
