Police and staff at a Frederick charity are trying to figure out who burglarized the nonprofit's offices early Friday morning.

Three computers and some supplies were stolen from Advocates for Homeless Families, an organization that helps homeless and at-risk families become self-sufficient, Executive Director Joe Case said.

Case said information technology specialists determined the computers were disconnected between 4 and 4:30 a.m. He said there was no sign of forced entry into the offices.

The computers contained case files on families the charity was assisting, but the information was also stored on the organization's server.

"Thank goodness they didn't take the server," Case said.

Staff members were initially expecting to be without e-mail or administrative information such as schedules for a few days, but Case said IT personnel got the system working again.

Case said staff members feel a sense of being violated by the burglary, during which the thief went through the office and supply cabinets.

"This office is like a second home to us as well," he said.

Case said he was appalled that someone would steal from a charitable organization dedicated to serving the underprivileged. He said the charity has insurance, but will have to use money intended to help the homeless to pay a deductible and the cost of the IT help.

"It's unbelievable," Case said. "We depend on donations, and to have to replace things that are stolen is going to cost us money we don't have in the budget."

Anyone with information about the burglary is asked to call Officer First Class Stewart Alcorn at 301-600-7501. Tips may be also left anonymously at 301-600-8477 or by e-mail at fpd crimetip@frederickmdpolice.org.
