Emergency financial manager Robert Bobb says Tuesday that the computers are among 40,000 laptops purchased by the district as part of a significant technology upgrade.
The cash-strapped district also bought 5,000 desktop computers, printers and other equipment with nearly $50 million in federal stimulus funds. The 77,000-student district faces a budget deficit of more than $300 million.
Students in grades six through 12 will have access to the small laptops. Each of the district's 4,600 teachers also received laptops.
The student laptops will remain in classrooms. Each computer will feature anti-theft security and an etched-in district logo.
Hundreds of district computers have been stolen in recent years, included more than 500 in 2009.
