Some patients in the Woodstock area are getting new medicare numbers following the theft of several computers from a medical clinic last week.
One of the computers contained information including names, addresses and health numbers, but no personal medical histories were compromised.
Mary Moszynski, a spokeswoman for the Department of Health, said the affected patients are being issued new provincial health numbers in response.
"The cards will be issued automatically by the department, as soon as the department gets a complete list of the affected patients," Moszynski said.
"There is no need for patients to do anything except destroy their old cards when the new cards come in."
Deputy chief Keith Bull of the Woodstock Police Force said the medical clinic at 110 Chapel St. was broken into sometime between 10 a.m. on Jan. 8, and 1:45 p.m. on Jan. 9.
The computers were taken from the office of Dr. Frances Alborg, one of several physicians practising in the centre.
Bull said the janitorial staff discovered the break-in and contacted police, adding that several other offices within the joint medical and dental complex were entered.
In addition to the computers, money, drugs and some other electronics were missing from the facility.
