Thieves break into Skelmersdale cadets centre and wreck equipment

By Henry James

A break-in at the base of West Lancashire Sea Cadets in Skelmersdale in which computers werre stolen and equipment damaged, has been described by its commanding officer as a “kick in the teeth” - but he is determined the group will carry on regardless.
The thives caused a large amount of damage during the break-in and stole several computers from the training block on Elmstead.

Petty officer Stephen Stephen, the unit’s commanding officer, said: “They created havoc and caused a lot of damage.

"The thieves took a number of computers and electrical equipment. We are really upset that this happened. After all the good work we have done in the area, this is a kick in the teeth for us.

“We stayed in Tanhouse to give the youngsters, locally, something positive to do. After this we plan to stay where we are, but we will be improving our security."

The break-in is thought to have happened between 4.40pm on Friday, January 21, 2011 and 8.10am on Monday, January 24.

"By doing this the thieves are depriving the children of structured training,“ Mr Stephen said.

"It is very thoughtless and they have not given any regard to the consequences."

Despite the damage to one of their buildings, the sea cadets were due to meet last night (Tuesday, January 25, 2011) at their ceremonial and administrative building, also on Elmstead.

Mr Stephen added: "It will take a lot more than this to deter us. We are here for the long haul and we will keep going."

“This makes us more determined to give some structure and fun to the children of Skelmersdale.”

A spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said: “We have yet to make an arrest concerning this incident.”

If anyone has information, or has seen anything, they should call Lancashire Police on 08451 253545.
