Old computer stolen, holds hospital patient info
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Officials of St. Francis Health System at Tulsa say theft of an old computer from storage in Broken Arrow has made vulnerable patient information the computer held. Health records, addresses and Social Security numbers of 84,000 patients treated before 2004 were in the computer's memory.
According to the Tulsa World, hospital officials said former patients affected should soon get a letter warning them of their vulnerability to possible identify theft, telling them of precautions to take, and offering a free credit-monitoring program.
But they said that, so far, there have not been any reports of identity theft involving information on the stolen computer. The hospital officials said the thieves who took the computer on Jan. 14 probably wanted it for parts and metals it contained, like copper and gold.
