YPSILANTI: More than 100 computers stolen from school district
Since the beginning of the school year, more than 100 computers have been stolen from classrooms within the Ypsilanti Public School District.
On the weekend of April 15, roughly 75 iMac desktop computers were taken from 10 classrooms at Ypsilanti Middle School. About 25 were stolen from George Elementary School at 1076 Ecorse Road April 14. Another 25 were stolen from the computer lab in Erickson Elementary School at the beginning of the school year.
“The computers are important for our students’ education,” district spokesperson Emma Jackson said. “The computers are an important tool that are used in the classroom and they should have access to that.”
Jackson said there are rooms without computers but students can access them in other classrooms.
Staff had locked all of the classrooms before the time of the thefts, she said.
The district is now talking about what it can do to increase its security and what preventative measures can be taken to ensure the thefts do not happen again, she said.
“A lot of energy is being focused on that subject,” Jackson said.
Those with information regarding the thefts should contact the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department at 734-971-8400.
