READING, Pa. -- Police have recovered one of several computers they said were stolen from Albright College in Reading.Acting on information from school security, state police troopers said they found the computer and other miscellaneous items related to the theft in a residence near campus Thursday night.School officials said the recovered computer is the one believed to have held most of the personal information they were concerned could be compromised. They also added that it appears the computers were stolen to be traded for drugs, not for the information they contained.
4/13/11 STORY: Theft Of College Computers May Result In Breach Of Personal DataThe computers went missing from the school's financial aid office in February, but Albright only publicized the theft for the first time on Wednesday when it sent out 10,000 letters to faculty, staff, and current, former, and prospective students whose names, addresses, and Social Security numbers may be stored on the computers.School officials said they were advised by local and federal authorities to wait until they had a better handle on the situation before making the thefts known to the public. The FBI is among the agencies involved in the investigation.Albright has hired a risk management firm to provide those affected by the thefts with free credit monitoring and identity theft protection.
