Burglars Steal Computers From Boaz Elementary

Summer seems to have arrived early, and many of us are opening windows to keep cool.
Boaz Police said it appears when a Boaz Elementary School teacher closed a window, the teacher did not know the window did not lock automatically.
Chief Terry Davis said burglars took advantage and stole electronics worth about $7,000.
“Thieves are opportunists and they go around just looking for any little thing,” Davis said.
“Unfortunately that happened.  It wasn’t the teacher’s fault, it wasn’t anybody’s fault.
“It’s just one of those things that happened.”
Davis said burglars got into the classroom and took four laptop computers, a camera, and some wireless internet equipment.
“And then left, I guess, through the same window because they didn’t exit through the hall because the alarm would have went off if they’d have went through the hall.”
Police are looking for suspects, and Davis said he hopes someone at the recreation center nearby may have seen something.
He has two key bits of advice.
The first is for you, as you open windows to beat the heat.
“Just make sure when you close them that they are locked.  Just take that extra half a second to make sure that they’re secured,” Davis said.
The second is for the thieves.
“Everwho got them, if they try to sell them, it’s going to be easy for us to identify them because of unique identification methods that the school uses.”
That’s in addition to the serial numbers, which were entered into the National Crime Information Center’s database.
This is the second break in at Boaz Elementary this school year.
Police caught the juvenile culprits from a September burglary, and hope to do the same in this case soon.
School officials in Fyffe said thieves recently stole computers there as well.
Chief Davis said Boaz police are working with Fyffe investigators to see if the two burglaries are related.
