THIEVES broke into the Ukwala Law Courts' registry in Ugenya district and stole a computer on Tuesday night. Court documents were destroyed during the incident. The thieves gained entry into the registry by breaking its door. Workers reporting for duty yesterday morningdiscovered the break-in.
Ugenya police chief Hussein Hassan said an Administration Police officer who was on duty when the incident occurred has been arrested. ''He is being grilled by senior district security officers over the matter,'' said Hassan. ''The officer might have connived with his colleagues to commit the robbery. He confessed having fallen asleep during the operation,'' he said. “We are holding the suspect and we are following vital clues that might lead to unraveling the mystery surrounding the robbery,” said the police chief.
Last month, a cartel targeting government institutions in Nyanza province stole three computers at the neighboring Ugunja district commissioner’s offices. An Administration Police officer was linked to the incident after an assortment of stolen goods was recovered from his house. The Ukwala Law Courts are barely 50 meters from the Ugenya district commissioner’s offices which is under 24 hours security surveillance.
