FLORENCE — Computers and related equipment with a combined value of at least $15,000 were stolen overnight from Wilson School, authorities said Tuesday.

The equipment — 10 laptops, two iPads and several computer cables — was stolen from the school’s computer lab,
Lauderdale County sheriff’s investigator Richard Richey said. He said the equipment has a value of $15,000 to $20,000.
“This is a serious matter,” Richey said. “We certainly need to find the people responsible so we can get the computers returned to the school.”

A person stealing items with a total value of $2,500 or more can be charged with first-degree theft in Alabama, a felony that carries a prison sentence of 2-20 years.

Wilson Principal Gary Horton said classes in the school’s ACCESS program continued as scheduled Tuesday.

“We were in the process of upgrading some of our equipment, so we were able to continue without interruption,” he said. “But it is important that we get the computers back, if at all possible.”

Horton said it’s likely that more than one person is involved in the theft. “It probably took more than one to get that much equipment out.”

Richey said the people involved “are familiar with the school and where they needed to go to get what they wanted.”

Richey said a school custodian discovered the break-in when he arrived Tuesday morning.

He said the thieves broke the glass out of a door at the rear of the school to gain entrance. They broke out the glass from the door leading to the library and also entered the library office.

“They apparently didn’t take anything from the library office, but the computer lab adjoins the library,” Richey said.

“They went through the library to get to the computers.”

He said a tool used to break out the glass was left in the school.

Richey said video is being reviewed to see if the theft was captured on either of the school’s two surveillance cameras.

A break-in at Rogers High School was reported Monday, Richey said. He said a couple of doors were damaged, but the only things reported taken were candy and other snack foods.
