The theft of computers from the Barnabas Trust has hit staff hard.
Three laptops and one desk computer were taken in a burglary overnight on Friday, metres from the manager's residence. The computers contain all the information required for the day-to-day running of the trust, including confidential reports.
Trust youth worker and counsellor Chrissie Guyton said she was concerned about all the sensitive data that had been lost.
The trust runs programmes for children aged 10 to 12 years, referred by schools or social agencies, who are identified as likely to benefit from organised extracurricular activities. The trust also supervises work for reparation by youth offenders.
In the 22 years Donald and Christine Talbot have managed the trust, this is the first time they have been burgled. Mr Talbot suspects those responsible were familiar with the premises.
The culprits appear to have entered by forcing a window.
As well as the computers being targeted, a filing cabinet was broken into and about $150 cash and cheques were stolen. Mrs Talbot said she felt gutted. As well as having to pay $2500 excess on its insurance, the trust will also be looking at forking out to install better security. As a consequence it may not have enough money to fund its camp this year.
