Three students held for stealing computer from college

MUMBAI: The police on Wednesday arrested three college students for allegedly stealing three personal computers from the computer lab of the Jogeshwari Institute. The three arrested are second and third-year science students of the college

The "passion'' to own a computer had driven the trio to commit the crime on the night of November 1 last year. The trio--Pervez Sheikh, Javed Baig and Alliuddin Sheikh--come from middle-class families. They confessed to committing the theft and said they wanted to develop their programming skills but were too poor to buy PCs.

Cops recovered the stolen computers from their homes in Kurar and arrested them after getting a tip-off from two youths--Sachin Chede and Yunus Sheikh-- they had arrested from Kurar on June 21. Chede and Sheikh, too, reside in the same locality in Kurar.

In his complaint, Vijay Narkede--a staffer of Ismail Yusuf College in Jogeshwari--said the college management learnt about the theft only when the college reopened two weeks after the incident occurred.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone X) KMM Prasanna said: "The three youths committed the theft during the Diwali vacation of November 2008. They were well-versed with the layout of the college.''

The trio have been booked under sections 380 (theft), 454 (house-trespassing) and 457 (house break-in during night) of the Indian Penal Code and were remanded in police custody till June 29, said senior inspector Ravindra Bhosale.
