On a night when more than 30,000 police personnel, snipers and choppers were deployed at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, turning it into a fortress, thieves managed to decamp with computers, Tetra handsets, microphones and even modems from the premises. The Organising Committee (OC) woke up
to the
reality on Saturday and lodged an FIR.
On October 13, the night before the Games’ closing ceremony, some equipment was stolen from the stadium, police said. “We have registered two cases of theft after we received a complaint from the OC officials on Saturday,” said DCP South HGS Dhaliwal.
The OC computed their loss in the past one week and came out with a list of items stolen from the stadium.
“In the complaint filed by the OC, it has said that computers and modems were stolen on the night of October 13. The modems were taken away after cutting the wires and detaching them from the main server,” said a senior police officer.
Police said they are in possession of the CCTV footage and were investigating the matter.
There was a strict vigil at all access points of the stadium with entry being allowed only for authorised personnel with accreditation cards.
“Since it happened a night before the closing ceremony and not many people had access to the area, it seems to be the handiwork of an insider. The OC has given us a list of items stolen and the people on duty there,” said the officer.
Reports of theft and pilferage have been coming in from other venues and stadiums as well.
The OC is hoping to auction these items and earn some revenue as they have already suffered a loss of more than Rs 1,184 crore.
