Janitor accused of stealing Tempe school equipment

Mesa police have arrested a janitor on suspicion of stealing science and other equipment from a Tempe school where he worked.

Randolph McEnany, 48, is accused of stealing a laptop and other equipment from Connolly Middle School, where has worked the last 12 years, and trying to fence the stolen property.

Police said officers received a tip from an unidentified Mesa resident who later gave them an assortment of equipment. It was not clear how the informant got the equipment.

Police contacted McEnany, who eventually admitted he stole the laptop as well as science and sports equipment and art supplies, according to a police report.Police contacted Connoly Middle School officials to confirm the science equipment was missing and that the McEnany worked there. A teacher later discovered a school laptop computer missing on Wednesday morning.

McEnany allegedly had asked a friend to sell the stolen property for him in exchange for half of the profit, but refused to identify the friend during interviews with detectives, police said.

McEnany said he stole the items because he needed money and that he sold the computer for $140 on Tuesday night, police said.

He was booked on suspicion of theft and trafficking in stolen property, Mesa police said.
