Kershaw County, SC (WLTX) - Kershaw County deputies have arrested a man they say stole new laptop computers from a school in Camden.

Officers have taken 24-year-old Kyle Phillips into custody.

Deputies say on Monday, they got a report of a break-in at the Jackson School on Jefferson Davis Highway in Camden.

According to deputies, the suspect made off with 28 new computers.

The Jackson school says the suspect also took two TV monitors.

Deputies say once they arrested Phillips, he told them he traded the computers for crack cocaine, but so far, has not told officers who the drug dealer was.

"He basically admitted to it, and we asked him where the computers were and he said he had traded them for crack cocaine," Sheriff Jim Matthews says. 

Deputies say the school did not turn their alarm system on properly. The school says they had mechanical failures with their multi-camera surveillance system, and it cost them a significant amount of money.

"Easily $20,000," Principal Gerald Gary says. "That is a lot of money especially at a time when state budgets are being cut. It feels horrible, I mean anytime you put a child's education in jeopardy that hurts."

Phillips is currently being held in the Kershaw County Detention Center. He will be charged with four counts of burglary and one count of grand larceny.
